SEMPRE Conference on Friday and Saturday!

Hey again!

For those of you who don't know, I'm presenting the findings of my MA dissertation at the SEMPRE PG Study Day at Hull on Friday. For more information, check out this link SEMPRE Conference Info.

Personally, I'm looking forward to hearing from fellow PG students on Friday and listening to Alexandra Lamont and Alinka Greasley's presentation on Saturday - Keeping it Fresh: How Listeners Regulate their own Exposure to Familiar Music  and Helen Daynes' presentation on Familiarity, Schemata and Patterns of Listening.

Will let you know how my presentation goes next week!  Fingers crossed!

First supervision meeting - TOP TIPS!

Hi,

So I had my first supervision meeting a couple of weeks ago.  Prior to the meeting, I was unsure about what to prepare in advance of my meeting and even though I had a look at a variety of books about "How to get a PhD" none of them seemed to answer my question, so I thought I'd give you all a few top tips:

FIRST SUPERVISION MEETING - TOP TIPS!

  1. Be prepared to answer the question - "What do you want to find out/know at the end of your PhD?"
  2. Think about how much "impact" your research will have.
  3. Make sure you have a idea of the research questions that you have identified (even though they may be very vague!).
  4. Don't be scared, your supervisors have faith in you and your abilties so be confident about your intended research project during your meeting.
  5. Discuss the Research Training Programme and identify which skills you want to learn/brush up on - better to do this early in the PhD than later.
  6. Listen and make notes!  You won't be able to remember everything that you've discussed after the meeting so make notes.
  7. Always agree the date of your next meeting and what you are expected to prepare for your next meeting.

Hope these tips are useful!!

Help needed!

Hi everyone

Sorry I haven't been blogging for the past few weeks, it's been a bit hectic!

I'm currently beginning the initial stages of my research for my PhD so I need help -

If you are a online gambler, who gambles either at home or whilst on-the-move (for example, at work, whilst travelling), please send me a message as I would like to conduct an informal interview with you via telephone. All data collected would remain confidential and anonymous.

Cheers!

Steph
